Sorption of 90Sr and 137Cs on clays used to build safety barriers in radioactive waste storage facilities

چکیده
The purpose of the work was to investigate sorptive capacity natural clay samples with respect 90 Sr and 137 Cs assess possibility using these as components protective barriers at radioactive waste isolation facilities. Bentonite clays Zyryanskoye Desyaty Khutor deposits high-melting Kampanovskoye deposit were selected for investigation. sorption through ionic exchange is characterized by value cation (CEC). In process experiments, all test displayed a high rate extracting strontium cesium radionuclides from aqueous solutions. It shown that affected content montmorillonite in samples: bentonite absorb up 98–99% initial radionuclide solution, while about 80% sorbed clay. Cesium practically fully tested degree amounts over 99%, highest distribution coefficient having been recorded sample ( K d = 5.0×10 3 cm /g). method fixation on identified selective desorption modified Tessier methodology. ions are more mobile than 97% which retained clays.

متن کاملOptimization of radioactive waste storage.
In several countries, low-level radioactive wastes are treated and stored awaiting construction and operation of a final repository. In some cases, interim storage may be extended for decades requiring special attention regarding security issues. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recommends segregation of wastes that may be exempted from interim storage or ultimate disposal. The pap...

The liquid wastes produced during the processing of radioactive materials at the Savannah River Site were initially stored in large underground tanks constructed of carbon steel. These liquid wastes were generated from the Purex process (for producing plutonium) and the HM process (for producing tritium). The liquid wastes were designated as high-level wastes and lowlevel wastes. As the product...
متن کاملThe sorption behavior of CS ion on clay minerals and zeolite in radioactive waste management: sorption kinetics and thermodynamics
In this work, Cs ion sorption on some clays and zeolite were investigated. Cs was used as a tracer. Activities were measured with a NaI crystal gamma counter. The particle size distribution was determined by a laser sizer. Surface area of the particles were determined by BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller method). Structure analysis was made by using X-ray diffraction. The chemical compositions o...
